House Shifting Checklist: How to Move Within Your City Without Stress

A move inside the same city looks simple until the week before. This checklist spreads the work out so moving day is just loading, driving and unloading.
Two weeks before
- Decide what you will not take: sell, donate or recycle it now. Fewer items means a smaller vehicle and a lower bill.
- Choose how you will move: a Tata Ace for a 1 BHK with friends helping, or packers and movers for a bigger home or if you want packing done for you.
- Ask for a quote (a video survey works well) and fix the date. Weekdays are usually easier to book than month-end weekends.
- Tell your society or building office, and check lift timings and parking for the truck at both buildings.
One week before
- Collect boxes, tape, bubble wrap, newspaper and markers.
- Pack rarely used rooms and items first: books, decor, winter clothes, kitchen extras.
- Label every box with the room and a short content list. Write FRAGILE on glassware and electronics.
- Keep documents, jewellery, cash and chargers in a bag that travels with you, not in the truck.
- Update your address with your bank, gas agency, internet provider and delivery apps.
Packing room by room
Kitchen: wrap plates individually and stand them on edge; fill gaps with cloth so nothing slides. Bedroom: pack clothes in suitcases and use soft items as padding. Electronics: use original boxes if you have them and photograph cable connections before unplugging.
Defrost and dry the fridge 24 hours before. Drain the washing machine. Dismantle beds and wardrobes, and keep every screw in a labelled bag taped to the furniture.
Moving day
- Be there when loading starts; heavy furniture goes in first, fragile boxes last.
- Keep an essentials box out: toilet paper, a kettle, snacks, phone chargers, basic tools and medicines.
- Do a final walk-through of every cupboard and the balcony before the truck leaves.
- Follow the truck live in the app and share the link with whoever is waiting at the new home.
- Check items as they come off the truck, before the crew leaves.
After the move
- Set up the beds and the kitchen first; everything else can wait a day.
- Unpack room by room using your box labels.
- Recycle the boxes and packing material.
